Boys of Fall

Ok so I normally don't post videos but this music video is worth it. It is Kenny Chesney's Boys of fall. It is from the perspective of a high school football player and even though I obviously never played my whole family did and I think it does an awesome job describing what its like to live in a small town that lives for those friday night football games. I can relate to every word of the song and what the coach is saying to his players at the beginning of the video.
I dedicate this post to my boys of fall.

When I feel that chill, smell that fresh cut grass
I'm back in my helmet, cleats and shoulder pads
Standing in the huddle listening to the call
Fans going crazy for the boys of fall
They didn't let just anybody in that club
Took every ounce of heart and sweat and blood
To get to wear those game day jerseys down the hall
Kings of the school man, we're the boys of fall

(Chorus:)
Well it's turn and face the Stars and Stripes
It's fighting back them butterflies
It's call it in the air, alright yes sir we want the ball
And it's knocking heads and talking trash
It's slinging mud and dirt and grass
It's I got your number, I got your back when your back's against the wall
You mess with one man you got us all
The boys of fall

In little towns like mine that's all they got
Newspaper clippings fill the coffee shops
The old men will always think they know it all
Young girls will dream about the boys of fall

(Chorus:)

(Chorus:)

We're the boys of fall

My studly grandfather was the captain of his High School football team right before he went to WW II. These are supposedly only their practice uniforms but they are still pretty funny looking.
This was a few of the seniors on his team. Kind of cool this picture is still around.
My brother Bryant has been playing football since he was 5. He is actually pretty good. He was able to go to the OSU football camp and be coached by Jim Tressel the head coach for The Ohio State Buckeyes.
He was a rock star in High school and was one of the best wide receivers the school has ever seen.
He pretty much rocks, look at him catching that ball.
My grandpa and Bryant
My brother Andrew played football this year. He was finally starting to play a lot and he got a stress fracture. Notice he wore the #27 like my brother Bryant did. That is the date of my birthday (the 27th) I like to think they wear it for their big sister!
So for those of you not from a small town where high school football is everything let me tell you what it is like.

*Downtown windows are lined with pictures of players and Quaker cheers
*The sports section in the local paper is bigger than all the other sections combined and its all about the HS Football.
*Restaurant signs wish the team good luck and keep track of their record.
*The crisp air on a fall friday smells like football and gets you ready for the days events
*Fridays at school there are poster all over the school, music plays over the load speakers to pump everyone up.
*Multiple pep rallies are held and no one complains about going to them.
*After school you get ready for the game by paining your face red and black or dressing in all school colors.
*Tailgating begins at 6:00 and all the cool kids hang out and eat pizza getting ready for the game.
*Meanwhile the parents are tailgating too. It doesn't mater if you have a kid on the team or not, you know where you are going to be rain or shine at 7:30 on a friday night.
*At 7:15 the team runs out on the field and the crowd goes wild. You'd think nothing else in the world mattered but these kids.
*After the game (no mater the outcome) fans rush the field and follow the players to the bandshell where they raise their helmet and we raise our voices to the schools Alma matter.
*There is no place I'd rather be on a fall friday night than a good high school football game!

GO QUAKERS! ;-)

And of course on a Saturday in the fall there is no place I'd rather be than in Columbus at the Horseshoe cheering on my Buckeyes. You know how much I love these guys (and if not... refer here! ) It is funny, my friend Aubri has made some observations about my passion for OSU. #1 you can see a physical change in the tension in my body when from when OSU is winning or loosing. #2 this is a snippet of a conversation we had when she was getting me all riled up about my team ...
Aubri: he he he. I love it when you get all mama grizzly about your Buckeyes
me: haha i don't know what comes over me

Aubri: I know! You're normally so sweet and gentle!

Haha I think she says it right. I'm NORMALLY all sweet and gentle but you even atempt to put my team down I will take you down, or at least try really hard. My emotions and the worst side of my competitive spirit take over and I am a crazy eyed buckeye fan. Last week when my dad and I were watching the game together (we haven't been able to do that in years) we were neck and neck and the fourth quarter was moving quick and my poor heart almost didn't make it. I was soo nervous, sick to my stomach about the outcome of the game. It consumed me and made me physically sick. I guess thats the mark of a true fan! And that I am. GO BUCKS!!!

  1. High school football here in Hilliard seemed big... until everyone in my family was done with high school. My dad and husband still attend the games, but they just don't seem as big. It's a strange feeling.

And I'm right there with you for OSU, sister! I love me my Buckeyes! And I'm not usually competitive at all... but with the Buckeyes, yeah. It's not pretty when someone disses my team!

  2. LOL! I'm famous! :-) I loved this post, and the one before it... I totally grew up in a town just like that. It's a great way to grow up.

  3. Oh man, don't mess with Kristin during an OSU game, seriously. I learned that a long time ago. ;) Remember when you stayed at my house for hours after my bridal shower so you could watch the entire game? Good times.
